Prague - What To Do

There is no excuse for being bored in Prague . If you have just arrived of course you must go and see the things that Prague is most famous for, like the enormous Castle on the hill, the Old Town Square and the Charles Bridge . Get lost and enjoy!

The architecture in this city is what is most breathtaking. Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance - All the dreamy spires, cobbled alleyways and bright colours are what a child’s fairytales are made of…

Evidence that all modern architecture is not bad can be found at the ‘Dancing’ or ‘Fred & Ginger’ building just south of the National Theatre along the Vltava River.

Remember it is not that long ago that communism ruled and the obvious functionality of some buildings is representative of this time.

You can take a variety of walking tours; get a general overview or a more specialist walk featuring the Jewish Quarter, Communism or Ghosts!

For all you ‘culture vultures’ museums, art galleries, theatre and concerts abound.

Bit of exercise, YES! Maybe take a cruisy 2 ½ bike tour with a fun, young guide who will show you the sights of Prague and get you out into some ‘green space’ too. You can hire a peddle boat and investigate the lazy flow and graceful curves of the Vltava River .

How about packing a picnic and going to the Eiffel Tower (what?!) Yes, Prague has its own mini-version of the famous tower, only 1/5 the size - up on Petrin Hill! Take the funicular train up and you get great views across Prague . If you are feeling particularly playful there is even a mirror maze!

The famous Wenceslas Square (which is really more of a wide boulevard) is the heart of the shopping & commercial centre of Prague and the setting for many historic events.

Thirsty in the afternoon? Couple your beer drinking needs with a tour of one Prague ’s famous Breweries!

How about a day trip?

Kutna Hora is just a little over an hour away by train is a UNESCO World Heritage site, this medieval gem of a town has been used for many movie sets. Most people come out here to see the macabre Ossuary – or more commonly know as the ‘bone church’ 40,000 skeletons have been arranged into decorative art within the chapel.

Addicted to castles?

The quiet little hamlet of Melnik is just under an hour away by bus from Holesovice Station.

The castle is more of a palace and is located in Bohemia ’s wine country. Melnik also has a tamer version of a bone church using a mere 15,000 skeletons.

Interested in WWII?

Terezin - 66 years ago the entire town of Terzin was taken over by the Nazis and made into a concentration camp. 140,000 men, women and children (mostly Danish Jews) were sent here - only 3,000 returned alive. The town still retains an eerie lifelessness about it. Catch a bus from Florenc station, it is just over an hour away.

How about staying in...

We have our own onsite restaurant & bar with TWO happy hours everyday! The Plus Crew are on hand every Thursday night playing havoc with the DJ in their PJ's. Prizes, drinks specials and music all night long.

Looking for 156BPM?

Nightlife. There is no shortage of it. Most places are open until 5 in the morning, it is not unusual to see one of our guests coming home just in time for breakfast.

Nightclubs. If you are up for a night of thump thump boom boom – there are many choices, here are just a few.

Mecca is the ‘in’ club right now, all the magazines are talking about it. The fact that it is just a few blocks from the hostel makes it all the more appealing. It’s only open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so plan accordingly. Like most good clubs it’s best after midnight.

Karlovy Lazne is a seriously cool place to hang out and in seriously cool location – right at the foot of the Charles Bridge . 4 Floors of fun!

The Roxy Dance Club is right off the Old Town Square and the music is a bit heavier. Mostly techno, drum & bass and jungle. The place is HUGE!

Radost FX has been voted one of the 10 best clubs in the world (not sure by who). They also have a restaurant that serves up a varied Mediterranean menu and decent veggie food.

For a club with a view try DUPLEX Dance Club it boasts a fantastic top floor position above Debenhams department store right in the centre of Wenceslas Square at Number 21.

Bars. They are everywhere. Remember, per capita the Czechs are the biggest beer drinkers in the world. From basement beer halls to trendy boozers, you will not go thirsty.

The Old Town has too many to even attempt to list. Everything from Irish Bars to the ubiquitous TGI Fridays. Turn down a little side street and sit yourself down and have a nice cold pivo (beer). A bit closer to the hostel we have a very unusual drinking establishment called the Cross Club. Just a 10 minute walk away, you can only identify the bar by the bizarre sculpture made from old auto parts (and it spins too!) Each floor is stranger than the one before – it just needs to be seen. Also check out the Beer Gardens along the Vltava River .
